New tools and approaches are necessary to facilitate public policy planning and foster the management of innovation in countries’ public health systems. To this end, an understanding of the integrated way in which the various actors who produce scientific knowledge and inventions in technological areas of interest operate, where they are located and how they relate to one another is of great relevance. The Emergence of a New Technology: A Multi-Perspective Analysis on the Case of Human Papilloma Virus (Hpv) Molecular Diagnostic Tests

Emerging technologies are sources of new industries and sub-sectors as well as they represent important drivers for technological change. Given the central role emerging technologies play, we aim to investigate the phenomenon of emergence in order to reveal its complexity. To this end, by drawing on an institutional-evolutional framework, we use a case study approach that combines a multi-perspective investigation with mixed qualitative-quantitative analyses, i.e. historical analysis, interviews, and advanced bibliometric techniques. Precisely, we investigate the process of emergence for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) molecular diagnostic tests since its conception in the 1980s. The need to encourage future generations of students in the pursuit of science and technological research has been viewed as a cornerstone of US efforts to maintain leadership in research, development, and innovation. However, few indicators of student intellectual activity at the graduate level are tracked on an ongoing basis. The aim of this paper is to provide evidence about graduate student publishing as an indicator of pre-doctoral research activity and, given the benefits of cumulative advantage to early producers of intellectual output, future scholarly success. It has been claimed that the advent of biotechnology about 30 years ago resulted in a shift in the pharmaceutical industry from an innovation system based on vertically integrated firms to a network structure in which large pharmaceuticals integrate knowledge from a variety of actors, including dedicated biotechnology firms (DBFs) and public research organisations (PROs) (McKelvey et al., 2004). It has been suggested that an important transition in the long-run trajectory of nanotechnology development is a shift from passive to active nanostructures. Such a shift could present different or increased societal impacts and require new approaches for risk assessment.
