The need to encourage future generations of students in the pursuit of science and technological research has been viewed as a cornerstone of US efforts to maintain leadership in research, development, and innovation. However, few indicators of student intellectual activity at the graduate level are tracked on an ongoing basis. The aim of this paper is to provide evidence about graduate student publishing as an indicator of pre-doctoral research activity and, given the benefits of cumulative advantage to early producers of intellectual output, future scholarly success. Research progress may be either gradual or abrupt. While both ways are important, major advances in science strongly depend upon explosive breakthrough discoveries. Currently, analyses of emerging or breakthrough areas are rarely performed systematically and are almost always done retrospectively. We have developed several strategies for early detection of candidate breakthroughs, based on citation dynamics. We have developed an index of biological species names appearing in the USPTO and PCT patent collections of 9 million patent documents. The Access and Benefit-Sharing Patent Index (ABSPAT) is intended to assist countries with monitoring trends in research and development involving genetic resources under the Nagoya
Protocol of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The ABSPAT index will also provide important insights into the role of biodiversity in developments in science and technology. In an effort to contribute to the Brazilian government’s strategies for research and technological development, this network has mapped the scientific and technological research performed worldwide for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Dengue over the last decade. It has been claimed that the advent of biotechnology about 30 years ago resulted in a shift in the pharmaceutical industry from an innovation system based on vertically integrated firms to a network structure in which large pharmaceuticals integrate knowledge from a variety of actors, including dedicated biotechnology firms (DBFs) and public research organisations (PROs) (McKelvey et al., 2004). We propose an improved analysis method based on an existing method (Young，Jong & Sang, 2008) of patent semantic analysis for emerging technologies. We selected the field of graphene sensor for empirical analysis, and drew semantic networks of technology keywords and technology evolution maps of graphene sensor. The empirical analysis result shows that this new method can support better patent analysis of technology evolution. The structure of the Arts & Humanities Citation Index: A mapping on the basis of aggregated citations among 1,157 journals

Using the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) 2008, we apply mapping techniques previously developed for mapping journal structures in the Science and Social Science Citation Indices. Citation relations among the 110,718 records were aggregated at the level of 1,157 journals specific to the A&HCI, and the journal structures are questioned on whether a cognitive structure can be reconstructed and visualized. Both cosine-normalization (bottom up) and factor analysis (top down) suggest a division into approximately twelve subsets.
