Collaborative networks in gene editing

Over 15,000 articles and reviews published since 2000 were collected, with genome editing-related queries in the Web of Science (Table 1 and Supplemental Table S1). We use tech mining to investigate the underlying patterns that drive the adoption of genome editing, proposing an integrated research framework with bibliometrics, text analyses, and network analysis to analyze publication trends, authorship patterns, and key research topics and technologies of the genome editing field and provide quantitative and qualitative insights into the drivers of the CRISPR craze. Of the literature on gene-editing modalities, CRISPR-Cas continues to grow, whereas publications describing meganucleases, zinc-finger nucleases, and transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALENs) have been decreasing since 2016. The top 5 nations contributing gene-editing research are the United States, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan, with papers from China growing fastest.  A diverse set of collaborative authors provides both leadership in the field and globalized contributions to the literature across space, time, and disciplines. The collaborative nature of this field is underscored by each of the 15 leading authors in the field (Table 2), all working with at least one fellow leading author, with 10 of the 15 co-authoring manuscripts with at least 2 other leading authors, and 4 highly collaborative authors contributing manuscripts with three or more prolific colleagues.

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS OF THE 3D PRINTER APPLIED TO HEALTH (INOVAÇÕES TECNOLÓGICAS DA IMPRESSORA 3D APLICADA À SAÚDE) FULL-TEXT

3D printing technology has already been created by the manufacturing industry for decades. In the health area has grown rapidly, allowing the application to various areas of medicine. This work carried out a quantitative study in patent databases with the aim of sticking to the innovations that emerged with the 3D printer applied to health through technological indicators inherent in patents. It is possible to check the countries, companies and applications for the innovations that emerged after the patent for Fusion and Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology came into the public domain. China, listed as one of the countries in the Global Innovation Index, holds the development of new technologies as well as the patent protection of 3D Health Printer prototypes.

A tecnologia da impressão 3D tem sido utilizada pela indústria de manufatura há décadas. Na área da saúde tem crescido rapidamente, possibilitando a aplicação em diversas áreas da medicina. Este trabalho realizou um estudo quantitativo nas bases de dados de patentes com o objetivo de apontar as inovações surgidas com a impressora 3D aplicada à saúde por meio de indicadores tecnológicos inerentes nas patentes. É possível verificar os países, as empresas e as aplicações referentes às inovações que surgiram após a patente da tecnologia de Modelagem por Fusão e Deposição (FDM) entrar em domínio público. A China, listada como um dos países no Índice Global de Inovação, detém o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias, bem como a proteção por patente de protótipos da Impressora 3D aplicado à saúde.

GLOBAL HIMALAYA PLANT RESEARCH TREND AND PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCE CITATION INDEX FROM 1998 TO 2017 (FULL-TEXT)

Himalaya plants have essential ecological implications and are frequently used by local tribes for various purposes, many of which are traditionally used to cure various ailments in humans and livestock. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the global scientific production of Himalaya plant research, study the characteristics of Himalaya plant research activities,
and identify patterns, tendencies, and regularities of related articles. Data were based on the online version of Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded), from the Web of Science database. Articles referring to Himalaya plant were assessed by the trend of publication output during 1998 to 2017. Globally, 2,471 papers were published during the 20-year
study period. The most productive countries, institutions, Web of Science subject categories, and journals, as well as the most cited articles, were identified. The mainstream research on Himalaya plant was in the plant sciences, ecology, environmental sciences, pharmacology and pharmacy. India, China, USA, and Pakistan held the majority of total world
production. Research on the species diversity and conservation, medicinal plants, and ethnobotany remained the hotspot during the 20-year study period, whereas that on the related topic “climate change” increased dramatically since 2009.

CONCLUSION: With synthetic analysis of word in article title, author keyword, abstract, and Key Words Plus Key Words Plus, it can be concluded that application of compounds derived from Himalaya plants in clinical medicine, pharmacology and oncology, and research related to chemistry, genetics, and microbiology is the ongoing Himalaya plant research in the
21st century. Gaps are present in knowledge about the genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics of Himalaya plants and their associated microbes.

The role of knowledge intensive business services in economic development: a bibliometric analysis from Bradford, Lotka and Zipf laws (FULL-TEXT)

The international scientific community considers Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) as one of the main themes related to innovation and economic development. This article presents a review based on Scopus and ISI Web of Knowledge databases, on the KIBS topic in the world, considering the period 2000-2017. The study aimed to understand the role of KIBS in regional development, and they were considered in their roles as innovations’ attributes and resources, methodologies and tools for innovation management, transfer, knowledge diffusion and networks. They concentrate in the areas of business, management and economics, developing approaches to seek innovation, competitiveness and economic development.

Bibliometric Analysis of Trends in Global Sustainable Livelihood Research (Full-Text)

The concept of sustainable livelihoods (SL) is one of the most important subjects of sustainable development, and is an important long-term goal for poverty alleviation. There has been growing interest in the nature and practical application of SL in recent decades. This paper applies bibliometric analysis to collect and analyze data on sustainable livelihoods from the expanded Science Citation index (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). Bibliometric maps can assist greatly in visualizing and summarizing large volumes of data and in studying scientific outputs. The findings offer insights into research trends pertaining to SL, such as these: (1) In recent decades there has been an increase in both the number of papers on SL and their scientific influence. (2) The most active journals are Sustainability, Ecology and Society, Land Use Policy, and International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Ecology. (3) SL papers are distributed mainly in the fields of Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, Ecology, Planning & Development, and Green & Sustainable Science & Technology. (4) The USA and UK are leaders in SL research as measured by both the quantity and quality of SL publications. Some developing countries, notably India and China, have seen an increase in SL publications in recent years. (5) Wageningen University in Netherlands, the Chinese Academy of Science, and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), headquartered in Indonesia, have had a major influence in the field of international SL research. (6) International cooperation has a positive effect on the growth of SL research, suggesting that there is a need for strengthening cooperation among countries, international institutions, and individuals. (7) Major areas of SL research (“hot topics”) are theoretical research on the SL concept; ecosystem conservation; poverty reduction in the poverty-stricken areas; the impact of climate change on livelihoods; and linkages between SL-related policies and institutional change

Bibliometric analysis on tendency and topics of artificial intelligence over last decade

Artificial intelligence (AI), together with its applications, has received world-wide attentions and is expected to exert force on the development of global economy and society in the future. By means of bibliometric method, the study aims at providing an overview on the research tendency and the most concerned topics of AI during the past decade. The database of Web of Science was chosen and the articles published in AI journals were retrieved. Top 10% of the yearly high-citation articles (12,301 articles) published since the year of 2008 were selected as sampling articles for the analysis. The bibliographic records were used for the overall analysis, and the core keywords were studied and classified into three categories (algorithm, general technology and application technology) for topics analysis. As results, number of articles in AI by year and country, the country collaboration and well-known institutes and researchers in AI were presented. Also we proposed and concluded the five most concerned topics, which are perception intelligence (1st), human mind simulated intelligence (2nd), classical model based machine learning (3rd), bio-inspired intelligence (4th), and big-data based intelligence (5th). It is the authors’ wish that the study were helpful for researchers to have an overall grasp of the recent status of AI development.

Analysing the theoretical roots of technology emergence: an evolutionary perspective

There has been much research concerning emergence in technology, ever since knowledge has been accepted as a prime engine of economic growth. However, even though there are a growing number of publications, the concept remains ambiguous. In this study, we aim to trace emergence discussions to find the evolution of related concepts, in order to explore usage in the technological context. To achieve this, the philosophy of science, complexity, and economic literatures are reviewed in accordance with the emergence concept qualitatively. Then, a bibliometrics study is performed to strengthen the qualitative argument and find evidence of emergence in technology studies for comparison. Based on the findings, we can assert that the definition of technology emergence needs to be revised with consideration of its theoretical foundations. Moreover, after discussion, research questions are posed for future research.

An overview of intellectual property within agricultural biotechnology in Brazil (Full-Text)

Brazilian agricultural biotechnology has seen great advances in recent decades, especially in the development of GM crops, including soybean, cotton, and maize, which has placed Brazil in second place since 2013 in the ranking of countries with the greatest GM-cultivated area. However, patenting these technologies is somewhat more restrictive in Brazil than in other countries, such as the USA and Japan, especially concerning isolated biological material from nature. Hence, the intellectual protection of crops in Brazil is encompassed by sui generis rights and/or the patenting of only the development process. Given the current scenario and the importance of biotechnology for the Brazilian agriculture sector, it is necessary to deeply study the patent system for recently developed technologies to identify opportunities for enterprises and national institutes to act in this area. The application of novel biotechnological strategies to agriculture will contribute to the expanding agriculture sector and become part of the solution to global challenges. Through this study, we can identify the major companies developing and protecting their agrobiotechnologies. Additionally, a more detailed analysis verifies that although there are some restrictions in Brazilian laws, GM patent applicants find ways to obtain intellectual protection for the tools they use in the development of GM crops, which include regulatory sequences, gene constructs and production methodologies. Mechanisms to stimulate investment in Brazilian research companies and public policies must be consolidated, allowing investment and public–private partnerships in this sector, with the aim of applying biotechnological knowledge and turn it into products demanded by society.

Imbalances between the Quantity and Quality of China’s Solar Energy Research (Full-Text)

China’s solar energy industry is developing rapidly and China’s solar energy research is experiencing a high speed of development alongside it. Is China’s solar energy research growth quantity-driven (paper-driven) or quality-driven (citation-driven)? Answering this question is important for China’s solar research field and industrial sector, and has implications for China’s other renewable research programs. Applying statistical methods, the citation analysis method, and web of science data, this study investigated China’s solar energy research between 2007 and 2015 from two perspectives: quantity (numbers of papers) and quality (number of paper citations). The results show that the number of Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) papers on solar energy in China has grown rapidly, surpassing the United States to become the world leader in 2015. However, the growth rate in scientific production was consistently higher than the growth rate of the number of times cited. When considering the average number of times a paper was cited among the top ten countries researching solar energy, China was in last place from 2007 to 2015. Further, the impact and effectiveness of China’s papers were below the world average from 2010 to 2015, and experienced a sharp decreasing trend. These results suggest that China’s solar energy research is a quantitatively driven model, with a mismatch between quantity and quality. New policies should be introduced to encourage high-quality research and achieve a balance between quantity and quality.

A scientometric review of research in hydrogen storage materials

Hydrogen is a promising sustainable energy carrier for the future due to its high energetic content and no emissions, other than water vapor. However, its full deployment still requires technological advances in the renewable and cost-effective production of hydrogen, cost reduction of fuel cells and especially in the storage of hydrogen in a lightweight, compact and safe manner. One way to achieve this is by using materials in which hydrogen bonds chemically, or by adsorption. Different kinds of Hydrogen Storage Materials have been investigated, such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Simple Hydrides (including Magnesium Hydride, MgH2), AB5Alloys, AB2 Alloys, Carbon Nanotubes, Graphene, Borohydrides, Alanates and Ammonia Borane. Billions have been invested in Storage Materials research, resulting in tens of thousands of papers. Thus, it is challenging to track how much effort has been devoted to each materials class, by which countries, and how the field has evolved over the years. Quantitative Science and Technology Indicators, produced by applying Bibliometrics and Text Mining to scientific papers, can aid in achieving this task. In this work, we evaluated the evolution and distribution of Hydrogen Storage Materials research using this methodology. Papers in the 2000–2015 period were collected from Web of Science and processed in VantagePoint®bibliometric software. A thesaurus was elaborated relating keywords and short phrases to specific Hydrogen Storage Materials classes. The number of publications in Hydrogen Storage Materials grew markedly from 2003 to 2010, reducing the pace of growth afterwards until a plateau was reached in 2015. The most researched materials were MOFs, Simple Hydrides and Carbon-based materials. There were three typical trends in materials classes: emerging materials, developed after 2003, such as MOFs and Borohydrides; classical materials with continuous growth during the entire period, such as Simple Hydrides; and stagnant or declining materials, such as Carbon Nanotubes and AB5 Alloys. The main publishing countries were China, countries from the European Union (EU) and the USA, followed by Japan. There is a division between countries with continued growth in recent years, such as China, and those with stagnant production after 2010, such as the EU, the USA and Japan. The results of this work, compared to a previous study in storage materials patenting by our group, and the recent launch of commercial hydrogen cars and trains and stationary hydrogen production and fuel cell solutions, indicates that although the Hydrogen Energy field as a whole is transitioning from lab and prototype stages to commercial deployment, materials-based hydrogen storage still has base technological challenges to be overcome, and therefore still needs more scientific research before large scale commercialization can be realized. The developed thesaurus is made available for refinement and future works.
